Design Concept

This is one of a series of quilts in which three dimensional, constructed tucks are incorporated into a pieced background. The background was pieced from strips of overdyed striped fabric in 12 pure rainbow hues, alternating with strips of a dye painted fabric in a radiating design of rainbow colors fading to black. The alternating of background strips creates the illusion of black checks floating in space, with unexpected areas of light and color.
Each tuck is pieced from two different fabrics. The left sides of the tucks are a gradation of fully saturated, pure rainbow hues. The right sides of the tucks are a black and white checks, alternating with graduations from white to gray to black. The use of color and value gradations on each side of the three dimensional tucks creates the illusion of movement and light across the surface of the quilt. Because different color gradations are used on the right and left sides of the tucks, the appearance of the quilt can be changed significantly by changing your point of view. I like to call the quilts in this series "viewer participation art."

The three dimensional center of the quilt is surrounded by a border of white checks floating in a field of black. A binding of dye painted fabric in subtle gradations of rainbow hues completes the quilt.
The original design for this quilt was drawn and colored using Corel Draw!, a vector drawing program for PC computers.
