Design
Concept
My best-known quilt of all time is probably Corona #2: Solar Eclipse, which is now in the collection of the National Quilt Museum. For my 30th anniversary show in 2013 it seemed appropriate to visit this theme again. I made a new drawing that is similar to the drawing for Corona #2, but this time it needed to fit into a perfect square so, although there are many similarities, this is a completely new drawing. I made a series of sketches until I found one that I liked. The sketch was projected onto freezer paper to make a full-sized pattern. The freezer paper was cut into individual pieces which were used as templates for cutting the fabric. The flames were drawn in sinuous curves, with ribbon shapes overlapping. The sun, moon and negative, background areas are perfect circles drawn with a compass.
The top was pieced from my one-of-a-kind, hand-painted fabrics and many different fabrics from my various collections for Benartex (available in our Internet
Store). All of the circular and curved seams in
this quilt were joined using "Applipiecing", a technique
I developed in 1989 to make curved seams fast, easy,
and accurate. Instructions for applipiecing can be found in

I have often joked that if they would give it back, I would put more quilting in Corona 2. So this was my big chance. Every inch of Corona #3 is quilted heavily, almost to the level of machine embroidery in some areas. If I had put this much quilting into Corona 2, I would probably still be working on it 24 years later.
Since the first two solar eclipse quilts had pieced backs I decided to do a curving, pieced back on this quilt also. The back is made from fabrics in my Gradations, Splash, Atmosphere, and Multi-Tye-Dye collections for Benartex.
