Design Concept

After piecing the very complex design for Corona #3, I decided to make another composition, based on circles, that was much simpler and more geometric. One of my (as yet unachieved) goals has always been to make a piece that shows as much restraint as a Mark Rothko painting. This was a step in that direction. The top was pieced from four fabrics in my Gradations collection for Benartex and one fabric from my Ombre Strip collection for the binding. (available in our Internet Store).

All of the circular seams in this quilt were joined using "Applipiecing", a technique I developed in 1989 to make curved seams fast, easy, and accurate. Instructions for applipiecing can be found in our Internet Store. The quilting was done in organic patterns, which make the circles look like part of a microscopic organism.

I started the design by drawing a 30" x 30" square in Corel Draw, and then sub-dividing it into rectangles. I tried various arrangements and sizes of dots to come up with a final arrangement that I liked. Once I found the arrangement I liked, I filled the shapes with fountain fills to simulate the fabric from my gradations collection, which I planned to use in the actual quilt. The entire design was then drawn on freezer paper to make templates for cutting the fabric. I printed the outlines of the smaller circles to be traced onto the freezer paper. The large circle was drawn with a big compass.
