Design Concept:
|
The design for this quilt evolved from a series of sketches
that started with a Bradford pear leaf that fell from a tree
in my neighborhood in the autumn. After drawing several version
of the leaf, I began to realize that it was similar in many
ways to the patterns on the wings of a butterfly. This version
of the drawing actually looked more like a butterfly wing
than a leaf, so I called the quilt Lepidopteran #3. All of
the fabrics in this quilt are from my Gradations and Splash
collections, which I designed for Benartex. |
|
The sketch was projected onto freezer paper to make
a full size drawing. (left) |
Here is the full size drawing on freezer paper before
I started cutting it up to make templates for cutting
my fabric. (right) |
|
Here the freezer paper has been cut into templates and
the fabric selection and piecing are in progress. (Bryerpatch

|
To the right, the quilting is being done on a Bernina 820. Half
of the quilting was done with feed dogs up, and the other
half was free motion. |
