Design Concept

In the summer of 2013, we chartered a boat named Eldean and set out on my very first experience with boating. We cruised through the San Juan and Gulf Islands, north of Puget Sound. The landscapes were beautiful everywhere we went but I also became fascinated by the patterns of reflections in the water. I took many close-up photos of reflections. The image in this quilt came from a reflection of Eldean at the dock in Bellingham, Washington. I zoomed in until the reflections looked like an abstract expressionist painting.

The fabrics are solid black plus two fabrics from my Gradations collection for Benartex. The binding is also made from two Gradations fabrics: blue, surrounding the light colored fabric, and red, surrounding the blue corner. Pencil and grey thread create the shadows. A touch of red was also added with pencil and thread.
