Design Concept
My favorite traditional quilt block is the "Log Cabin". I love
the endless interactions that take place between the blocks when they are
sewn together, and the complex visual texture created by the hundreds of different
scrap fabrics used in many of the 19th century log cabin quilts which have
been preserved.
SKYLIGHTS is a scrap quilt made from strips of fabric, left over from several
of my other quilting projects. The construction of this quilt is based upon
the traditional "Log Cabin" pattern. Instead of squares or rectangles,
I have used quadrilaterals in which no two sides are the same length. This
creates a series of diagonal lines across the surface of the quilt, rather
than the traditional horizontal and vertical lines. The center of each quadrilateral
is a deep turquoise, the color of the sky on a cloudless day. This suggested
the title "SKYLIGHTS".
The machine quilting was done freehand, with no marking, in a random, meander
pattern.
