Design Concept:

Deciduous Decendants started with a vest I made in 1986 to wear to the International Quilt Festival in Houston, TX. In January of 1987 I was invited to be in an art-to-wear show at the Minneapolis Art Institute. I decided to add sleeves to the vest and flesh out the ensemble with a dress and hand painted shoes.

This ensemble begins with a jacket made from three dimensional silk maple leaves, hand painted, machine embroidered and quilted in Autumn colors. Each leaf was constructed separately and is filled with cotton batting. The leaves are loosely attached to a hand painted silk charmeuse lining, and the edges are covered with machine embroidery in many different colors of thread.
The layered skirt, with an uneven hem, is designed to look like tree bark or the forest floor. Fourteen yards of 4mm China silk were painted and overdyed, then hand pleated by wrapping the fabric around a 12" stainless steel pipe, making hundreds of wraps of string around the fabric, then compressing the fabric into folds and letting it dry. The fabric in the skirt had two layers, and the top layer and is full enough to make a full circle when in motion.
