Design Concept

This quilt was created especially for Playing with a Full Deck, an exhibition of small quilts depicting a set of playing cards. The background was pieced from black, white, and red fabrics, to represent the three of diamonds. This is one of a series quilts in which 1/2", constructed tucks are pieced into a patterned background.   Each of the ½" tucks is constructed from two different fabrics.   The right sides of the tucks are made from black and white striped fabric.   The left sides of the tucks were dyed in gradation from white to black.  The use of value gradations, and the twisting of the tucks from side to side, create the illusion of movement and light across the surface of the quilt. The three-dimensional center panel is surrounded by narrow borders of black and white checks and solid black.  A 1½" border of red "bandanna" print fabric finishes the quilt.  Playing with a Full Deck received support from the Smithsonian Museum and opened at the Smithsonian's Renwick Gallery in 1995 then traveled to 23 venues throughout the United States as part of the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES). Contemporary quilt collectors Warren and Nancy Brakensiek acquired the collection in 1998. The Brakensieks donated Playing with a Full Deck to the Visions Art Museum in 2012.
