Design Concept

This quilt is the first of a series of quilts based on photos taken at dawn on a beach. This beach is on Kauai in an area where we were the first humans of the day to walk on the sand.

The figures were appliqued onto a background fabric which is quilted with several different colors of thread, using patterns created by ocean waves on sand as the tide recedes. To create the quilting design, I resized my photograph, enhanced the contrast, and projected the lines in the sand onto the quilt top. Then I drew the lines with brown and white colored pencils. I quilted around each of my pencil lines, using darker thread on the bottom and lighter thread on the top. Then I filled in the spaces in between with thread that matched the background fabric. The footprints were outlined and left unquilted. I echo quilted the figure rather than extending the background lines through it.

The fabrics are both from my second collection of "Gradations" by Benartex.
