Design Concept

This is one in a series of quilts in which three-dimensional, twisted tucks are incorporated into a curving, string pieced background. Both the tucks and the background are pieced from 100% cotton print cloth, dyed in light to dark gradations of rust and turquoise and a color-to-color gradation from turquoise to rust. The background reminded me of the coast of southern California as it might be seen from the water. The illusion of movement in the background of the quilt is enhanced by the contrast between the front and back sides of the three-dimensional tucks as they twist across the surface of the quilt. Contrast is created by intersecting two different arrangements of light to dark gradations.  A radiating string pieced border surrounds the three-dimensional center panel. The corners were joined at angels other than 90 degrees, and appear to spiral. This quilt was made as a commission for a private home on the near north side of Chicago, Illinois. (See installation below)

The background was string pieced onto a paper foundation. The three-dimensional tucks were constructed separately. When the background was finished, the paper was removed and it was sliced into 1.5" wide strips. The strips were pieced back together with a tuck in each seam allowance, so the finished width is one-third less than the original width of the background panel. The three photographs under the background panel are pictures of the home where the commission will be installed. The triangle of fabric is the upholstrery fabric on the sofa over which it will hang.
