Design Concept

After piecing the very complex design for Corona #3, I decided to make another composition based on circles that was much simpler and more geometric. On of my (as yet unachieved) goals has always been to make a piece that shows a much restraint as a Mark Rothko painting. This is a step in that direction. This is the second quilt pieced in this design. The top was pieced from a single eight-foot piece of hand painted fabric which was also used for many of the templates in Corona #3.

All of the circular seams in this quilt were joined using "Applipiecing", a technique I developed in 1989 to make curved seams fast, easy, and accurate. Instructions for applipiecing can be found at Paper Pieces. The quilting was done in organic patterns, which make the circles look like part of a microscopic organism.
