Design Concept:

The design for this quilt was developed after I made a commitment to a new life partner, and also to spending half of my time in the Pacific Northwest. While I was excited about starting a new chapter in my life, I also felt like I was leaping into the great unknown. A picture of my great-niece Marie, jumping over a puddle, provided the perfect image to portray my mixed feelings of fear and exhilaration. Starting with a simple line drawing, I tried many different backgrounds, searching for the lines that best portrayed my feelings. I also tried different ways of integrating the figure into the background and finally settled on a series of swooping curves, many of which grow out of the lines in the figure.

This is the final line drawing which was printed onto a transparency. (left)

The sketch was projected onto freezer paper to make a full size drawing. (right)

The drawing was cut up to make individual templates for cutting my fabrics. Below are pictures of the piecing sequence.

All of the fabrics in this quilt are from various collections that I designed for Benartex. Some of the shading was enhanced with fabric pencils. Many different colors and values of #40 top-stitching thread were used to complete the images. The fir trees were added entirely with thread and represent my new home on the Olympic Peninsula. I walked around our neighborhood and photographed many different fir trees to get a feel for the shapes of the trees and branches.
