Design Concept

Photo © 2000 Caryl Bryer Fallert This quilt was inspired by a photograph I took in South Africa in 2000. The Yellow-billed Hornbill (tockus leucomelas) was my favorite South African bird because of it's colorful beak and graphic qualities. The realistic bird was pieced and appliquéd using fabric colored with ink and pencil. Dense thread-work on top of that fabric became the finishing details of the bird. The background is more abstract, and is pieced from many different fabrics from the various collections I have designed for Benartex. The tree limb was appliquéd with small, irregularly-shaped, raw-edged pieces to represent the rough texture of the bark.
