Design Concept

HIGH TECH TUCKS #22, #23, #24 was commissioned by DELUXE CHECK PRINTERS for the elevator lobby of their new facility in Kansas City.

This triptych is part of a series of quilts in which three dimensional, constructed tucks are incorporated into a pieced background.  The background was pieced from fabric dyed in a gradation of light to dark grey.  The zigzag pattern of the background continues from one panel to the next.

Each tuck is constructed from two different fabrics.  The right sides of the tucks are shades of grey.  The left sides of the tucks are a gradation of rainbow hues.  In the left panel, (#22) the warm colors are used.  In the center panel (#23) the entire spectrum was used, with warm colors changing to cool colors from left to right.  In the right panel, (#24) the cool colors of the spectrum are used.

When the viewer approaches the quilts from the entrance of the building ( left side of the quilt) only the rainbow colors can be seen.  From the right, only the shades of grey can be seen.  From the front, the background design can be seen.  The use of color and value gradations, and the twisting of the tucks from side to side, create the illusion of movement and light across the surface of the quilt.

A double border surrounds each panel.  The first is painted "rainbow" fabric, and the second is hand marbled fabric in shades of grey.

The backs of the panels are pieced in alternating stripes of commercial print fabric, and hand printed fabric created by the artist.   This fabric was created especially for DELUXE CHECK PRINTERS, who commissioned these quilts, and it incorporates all of Deluxe’s corporate logos for the last seventy-five years.
