Design Concept

At least once each year, I make a scrap quilt from strips of fabric left over from other quilt projects. In 1988, I made a series of quilts in shades of peach and turquoise. The left over strips from these quilts were sewn together in groups of related colors. Equilateral diamonds were cut, at various angles, from the resulting strip pieced fabric. These diamonds were pieced together with the lighter values toward the center of the quilt.

The black overlaid design is based on a "doodled" design of the type that filled the margins of my school notebooks as a child. The doodled design was enlarged, and machine reverse appliquéd to the pieced background. The title refers to the margins of my notebooks where the doodles originated. All of the machine quilting was done freehand, with no marking, and it echoes the doodle design of the black appliqué. This quilt was begun in December of 1988 and completed in February of 1989.

Original (doodled) pencil sketches for Life in the Margins #2: After Autumn.
On the back of this quilt is a large block based on the traditional "Log Cabin" block. It has been altered slightly to make it appear to spiral into the center, echoing the spiraling design on the front of the quilt. My use of a variation on a traditional quilt block, on the back of this art quilt, is my tribute to the creativity of the many anonymous quilt artists of the past.
