Learn to draw and piecing a perfect "Crown of Thorns" block
or spiky things in any curve. The class project will be an eight to twelve
inch practice block. You will also learn to draft your own original variations
on this traditional design. Emphasis will be on using color to dazzle
the eye as well as easy foundation and curved piecing techniques. Kits
of graduated fabric will be available for sale in the class, or the block
can be pieced in a limited range of colors with fabrics brought from home.
A sewing machine and iron will be required.
Supplies Needed
-
Graduated Fabric: You will need two gradations of color
and value. Fabrics dyed in color and value gradations will be
available for sale in the class, to preview these fabrics, See
our Internet Store You may also bring your own fabric
from home. Choose gradations of at least four to eight values (light
- medium - dark) of at least two colors. The more colors you have
to choose from, the more colorful your project will be. The results
you get will be much more dramatic if you choose solid colors or very
low contrast prints. Fat quarters or fat eighths of each color
will be enough.
-
Other Fabric: Bring a few additional fabrics in a range
of colors and values some of these may be used as backgrounds for
your Crown of Thorns, and may be larger prints. If you dye your own
fabric in color or value gradations, bring several choicesl. Large
amounts of any one fabric will not be necessary.
- Thread: medium grey, clear mono-filament
- Sewing Machine: One that is friendly and well adjusted. A zig zag,
as well as straight stitch will be very useful but is not absolutely
essential. If you own an open toed embroidery foot, bring it along.
