Classroom Requirements
Preferred Classroom Table Setup

Learn to piece perfect "Flying Geese" in a curve, like the ones in Caryl's 1995 AQS Best of Show quilt Migration #2. The class project will be an eight to twelve inch square practice block. A pattern will be provided. You will also learn to draft your own variations on this pattern. Kits of graduated fabric will be available for sale in the class, or the block can be pieced in a limited range of colors with fabrics brought from home. A sewing machine and iron will be required.  Visit our Gallery page to see more quilts using this technique.

Supplies Needed

  • Fabric: Choose gradations of at least four to eight values (light - medium - dark) of at least two colors. The more colors you have to choose from, the more colorful your project will be. The results you get will be much more dramatic if you choose solid colors or very low contrast prints.  Fat quarters or fat eighths of each color will be enough.
Bring a few additional fabrics in a range of colors and values some of these may be used as backgrounds for your flying geese, and may be larger prints. If you dye your own fabric, or have access to fabrics dyed in color or value gradations, these will be useful. Large amounts of any one fabric will not be necessary.

Fabrics dyed in color and value gradations will be available for sale in the class, to preview these fabrics,  See our Internet Store

  • Thread: medium gray, clear mono-filament
  • Sewing Machine: One that is friendly and well adjusted. A big zag, as well as straight stitch will be very useful but is not absolutely essential. If you own an open toed embroidery foot, bring it along. You must know how to operate your sewing machine
  • Heavy duty Extension Cord with two outlets. Three prong adaptor if needed for classroom outlets
  • Basic Sewing Kit for hand and machine sewing.
  • Iron Preferably with steam
  • Table Top Ironing Pad
  • Scissors (paper and fabric)
  • Scotch Brand Magic Tape
  • Rotary Cutter, Board and Ruler
  • Drawing Tools: Fine point sharpie marker, flexible curve, pencil, ruler, eraser.
  • Freezer paper (about 2 feet) or 10-12 sheets of copier paper or drawing paper.
  • Glue Stick
  • Litter Bag

OPTIONAL:

  • Small Portable Light Box (If you are driving and already have one)
