Caryl's series of "ILLUSION" quilts explore the illusion of overlapping transparent triangles. In this class each student will construct a small sample 16" x 22" rectangle, to learn the basic concept behind the "ILLUSION" quilts. This can be made into a 25" x 30" wall quilt, with the addition of a border. Once you have learned the basic techniques you will be able to develop your own variations on "ILLUSIONS".

Sample Quilts using this method can be viewed at: Sample 1 || Sample 2 || Sample 3 || Sample 4 ||Illusion Quilt Page

Supplies Needed:

FABRIC:

  • Three sets of eight graduated colors
(Hand dyed gradations available from the Bryerpatch Studio Internet Store: www.bryerpatch.com or similar)
You can use the same set of colors three times, or you can use three different sets of colors.
Naturally the more colors you use, the more colorful your wall quilt will be. A fat eighth yard (18" x 10") (1/2 meter x 1/4 the width of the fabric) of each color will be enough to complete the center rectangle, even if you use the same set of colors three times.
    • You may bring your own fabric from home. Solid colors work best.  If you bring prints, bring small, very low contrast prints.
      OR
    • Fabric kits of graduated colors will also be available for sale in the class. These can be previewed in our Internet Store

  • ½ yard of solid black or other very dark color.
  • 1 yard, coordinating print fabric for your outer border, quilt back, and hanging sleeve. Large prints in colors to match your graduated strips work well. Splash or Ombre Stripe from the Benartex Glacier Park Collection are recommended. (Check your local quilt shop or www.bryerpatch.com)

OTHER SUPPLIES:

  • Thread: Black, and a medium, neutral color for sewing your strips.
  • Approximately 27” x 32” rectangle of batting. Cotton or cotton blend is recommended. Batting should be approximately 1” larger than your quilt top.
  • Sewing Machine: One that is clean, friendly and well adjusted.  If you own a walking foot,  bring it along. You must know how to operate your sewing machine.
  • Long, heavy duty extension cord with at least two outlets. Three prong adapter if needed for classroom outlets.
  • Basic Sewing Kit for hand and machine sewing.
  • Iron Preferably with steam
  • Table Top Ironing Pad
  • Scissors (for paper and fabric)
  • Scotch Brand Magic Tape (or other non-shiny cellophane tape)
  • Rotary Cutter, Board (preferably gridded and large) and Ruler
  • A few sheets of paper for taking notes.
  • Litter bag
