one day class

Classroom Requirements
Preferred Classroom Table Setup

Supplies Needed

  • Sewing Machine: One that is friendly and well adjusted. with at least zig-zag and free motion capability.. You MUST know how to operate your sewing machine and know how to set it up for free motion sewing.
    • You must have at least one free motion foot. (darning foot, quilting foot, open toed darning foot)
    • Optional: If you own the following feet, bring them: open toed embroidery foot, open toed darning foot, "Big Foot", couching foot.
    • PLUS: extra bobbin case if you have one
  • Fabric: Bring small pieces of fabric in as wide a range of colors and values (light to dark) as you can manage. Snippets left over from other quilts are fine. You won't need a large amount of any one fabric, but you will want plenty of choices to play with. Metallics, foils, or anything else you can sew through will add to the fun.

    • Background Fabric: You will need three or four 8"-12" background squares. Black, solid dark, or low contrast painted fabrics always work well.
    • Sheer: Bring one or two 10"-12" squares of very sheer fabric such as tulle, netting, organza, etc. Black tulle is always the most popular choice. Those sleezy chiffon skarves that are sold at Walmart are the best.  They're only available in Spring and Summer in most parts of the country.
  • Thread: Bring a variety of colored threads in cotton or polyester, as well as clear monofilament. Rayons, metallics, and variegated threads can be included but using them will not be part of the class instruction.

  • Heavy duty Extension Cord with two outlets. Three prong adaptor if needed for classroom outlets

  • Basic Machine Sewing Tools

  • Steam Iron

  • Table Top Ironing Pad

  • Scissors (paper and fabric)

  • Rotary Cutting Board and Ruler

  • Tear Away Stabilizer 1-2 yards heavy weight

  • Wonder Under or other fusible web 1/2-1 yard

  • Drawing Tools : pen, pencil, ruler, eraser, paper

  • 1-2 Magazines or Books with colored pictures, preferably nature or science (ie. National Geographic, Scientific American, Smithsonian, etc..)

  • Glue Stick

  • Litter Bag

OPTIONAL:

  • Fleece or Cotton Batting 1/2 -1 yard
  • Teflon pressing sheet or bakers parchment
