In January of 2020, on a visit to the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum, I snapped a photo of a cougar. Since we often have cougars in the neighborhood where we live, captured on doorbell and critter cams, I decided to make a cougar the subject of this quilt. After doing some digital cosmetic surgery on the cat, I created an abstract graphic design filled with solid colors and made a graduated transparency in the photograph. By overlapping the two images, the cougar seemed to be contemplating the viewer, while also blending into the background, as cougars often do in nature. The face of the cougar is heavily quilted, almost to the level of machine embroidery. The background of the cougar’s body is quilted in fur patterns, and the remainder of the background is echo quilted. Digital printing was done by Spoonflower.com. |
